Trombone Shorty Mentor Text

Hello! Hope all is going as well as can be expected for you- whether you are teaching in person, hybrid, or distance learning.

Today I am going to share another reading activity utilizing the Storyline Online free resource. Using Storyline Online is a perfect option for any situation because it is free and anyone with internet access can use it!

The story I am sharing is a really good one! It is an autobiography called Trombone Shorty. It is written by Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and is read by Angela Bassett.

This story is full of vivid language, rich illustrations, and heart. There are many teaching points that you could pull out including…

making connections
figurative language
point of view
theme
how the setting contributes to the story
personal narrative
I also love the life lessons that this book encourages, such as following your dreams and working hard to achieve them.
I am including a free story questions activity for you (in print format and Google Slides format), but there is also a great point of view activity in the Teacher Notes on the Storyline Online site.

Here is the link for the FREE story questions…

Another great story to use for teaching many of the same skills is Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. If you are interested in story activities for Owl Moon, you can click on the cover below ↓.

Take care!
Kim
