I just love sharing classic children’s books and Brave Irene by William Steig is the one I am sharing today! This book is all about perseverance and setting your mind to something and doing it- a great message for kids (and adults, too)!
Have you read Brave Irene to your students this winter?
This book was published in 1986- so it is a little over 30 years old. Your kids will be excited to know that this book is written by the same author who created Shrek. A few of his other popular stories are Sylvester and the Magic Pebble and the Dr. DeSoto books.
Brave Irene is available on Storyline Online (free site) read by former Vice President Al Gore… you can find it here: Brave Irene Storyline Online
(Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig is also available on Storyline Online here:

This is such a great book for discussing character.
If your state follows common core (or even if they don’t, I am sure you have a similar standard) …
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3
Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events
This is such a perfect book for pointing out all that this standard encompasses!
