Christmas Tapestry is a Wonderful Holiday Read Aloud

Of all the Christmas read alouds, this one has to be my very favorite…

Christmas Tapestry by Patricia Polacco

If you choose to read this aloud to your class… be ready for tears! Every single time I read this book I cry. Even though I know what is going to happen I still cry. Every. Single. Time.

But the tears are happy tears and totally worth it! I actually think it is a great thing to cry when reading aloud to students and it is important to point out that good books make us feel emotion.

And the emotions in this one are so strong! This book is fairly long and may take you a bit to read. You could split this read aloud over two days, however, I think that most students will be interested and engaged and I would try to complete it in just one sitting.

I love to see the light in the kids’ eyes when they start to put all the pieces of the story together… it is magical!

A Fun Book Extension Activity…

A fun activity to complete at the end of this story is to have students complete their own tapestry including colors, patterns, and symbols that are important to their life story. This can be a simple sheet of white paper (construction or copy paper), crayons or colored pencils, and a ruler that the students can use to create their masterpiece.

This is a great activity for those last few days before winter break!

A few other holiday books that I love are…

Welcome Comfort by Patricia Polacco

Cranberry Christmas by Wende and Harry Devlin (see blog post here)

The Amazing Christmas Extravaganza by David Shannon (this book can be a little bit harder to find- but it is a gem!)
